Florida Winter Tour # 2 : Cooper wins!
21 February 2012
The second round of the Florida Winter Tour took place last weekend in Homestead, Florida. This 6 race championship, held in three rounds, will give at the end of this weekend a good idea of who’s involved in the battle for the championships.
In the Rotax Max class, Ben Cooper and Sandor Jakab were racing under SRA Karting / Birel colours. During Friday’s qualifying, Cooper got the pole for Saturday. In the pre-final race, he finished 2nd but the battle in the final race was tough. On lap 16th, he slipped from 2nd to 6th place, where he crossed the finish line. For Jakab, at his first race at the FWT, he qualified 15th and couldn’t complete the pre-final race. In the final, he finished 26th.
In the Rotax DD2 class, Zacharie Robichon (SRA / Birel) started the weekend well with a 4th place in qualifying. He scored both 5th place in the prefinal and final races.
In the Mini-Max class, Nathael Cantin was also racing with team SRA. With the 41st place in qualifying, he had to race in the last chance race to be able to move up to the pre-final. He succeeded with a 5th place finish and crossed the finish line in 31st place in the final race.
In the Max senior class, Ben Cooper was again starting the pre-final on the first row. He took the lead of the race on lap 6 and won the race. He drove a perfect race in the final for the win. “I was disappointed Saturday with my 6th place because I had an excellent kart in my hands. Today, I was able to prove it. The new Birel chassis is very easy to set-up and the development of this chassis, with the help of Peter Kalman, is a great success. I also would like to thank my mechanic for this weekend, my dad Ben Sr” said the champion. After two rounds, Cooper is now the runner-up in the championship standings. The other Team SRA driver, Sando Jakab, had a good day too with the 10th place in the final race.
Zacharie Robichon was starting the DD2 pre-final on the third row and he finished 4th in the pre-final and 7th in the final race. In the Mini-Max class, Nathael Cantin had to race in the last chance qualifyer again but did not have the same result as the day before. In the B final, he finished 4th. “We must keep in mind that, before the FWT, Nathael didn’t have a full season of racing experience and he is not used to racing with a cadet chassis in Canada. He is fast and he must continue to gain experience et to develop his regularity. Taking part in the FWT, were the level of competition is high, will help him to acquire experience quickly. I am convinced this experience will give him a very good training for the next season in Canada “ said Michel Boisclair, president of SRA Karting.
